Amtrak 231 - In Service 1977-2001

Initially based out of Chicago, locomotive 231 was based out of Los Angeles for most of its service career, often operating on San Diegan, Pacific Surfliner, Coast Starlight, Cascades, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquin, Sunset Limited, and Southwest Chief routes. Per records and photos, it has made trips on the Empire Builder, Michigan and Missouri corridor trains, Crescent, and California Zephyr.

Initially delivered in Phase II colors, 231 was rebuilt and repainted to Phase III in 1982, 1989, and again in 1995. An Operation Lifesaver decal was applied in 1996 as part of an event at L.A. Union Station, which it wore through retirement. Below is a sampling of its service life, with photos credited the photographer/collector.
